Biography / Artistic Approach

Carine Cheval studied under several marine painters, and was particularly influenced by the work of Thierry Lefort, who taught her the art of getting to the heart of the matter and maintaining an overall vision. In the spirit of Matisse, she believes that "a painting is successful if one sees the painting itself more than the subject."

She draws her inspiration from nature and from photographs which she reinterprets, accentuating the contrasts that resonate with her. What moves her most is the fleeting moment which she seeks to capture with energy through a swift and spontaneous gesture.

Fascinated by light and its variations, which she observes on water, people, or interiors, she makes it the raw material of her compositions. Her painting, figurative without being realistic, favors stylized forms that leave the viewer free to project their own imagination onto them.
