Sarah Fouqueau is a French painter whose work explores the body as a sensitive territory, an imprint, and a memory. A self-taught artist, she initially trained in theater at a self-managed high school in Paris, where she discovered life drawing—a decisive turning point towards a lasting artistic practice. Very early on, the body emerged as her central language: a masked, fragmented, transformed body, always bearing an intimate history.
After years in the corporate world, where she held leadership and team management positions, Sarah Fouqueau pursued painting in cycles, during intense and focused periods. This back-and-forth between two worlds nourished a deeply embodied body of work, marked by themes of erasure, reconstruction, and letting go. In 2024, following a burnout, she made a radical shift: she definitively left the institutional framework to dedicate herself fully to her art.
Her practice blends oil, plaster, spray paint, and India ink, often on raw supports like cardboard, emphasizing the importance of gesture and expression over the material itself. The process unfolds in several stages: the sketch—always the starting point—the physical work on the background, and then the final imprint of the body, affixed like a fragile yet assertive presence. Influenced by forms from theater, Asian puppetry, and street art, her figures defy any single cultural categorization.
Sarah Fouqueau's painting is both introspective and liberating. She doesn't seek to illustrate, but rather to bring about: a sensation, a state, a journey. Each work acts as a space for breathing, where the artist affirms a simple and essential quest: to feel alive, light, fully present.
