In an intense struggle between man and beast, Philippe Rude's Theseus and the Minotaur revisits the ancient myth with striking sculptural force.
The bodies intertwine in a battle frozen in time: Theseus, the determined hero, dominates the half-man, half-bull creature, in a confrontation where power and vulnerability merge. The contrast of materials accentuates the drama of the scene: the blackened bronze evokes the harshness of the fight, while the deep blue cube, both base and obstacle, symbolizes the labyrinth from which no one can escape.
With this work, Philippe Rude questions human duality – the struggle between reason and instinct, between light and shadow – and invites us to see in each struggle a path to self-knowledge.
