In this new variation of the “ Formulated ” series, Philippe Trefois further explores the subjugated body and the psyche trapped in invisible constraints. Three figures emerge, upright yet dislocated, linked by an underlying tension. Their scribbled features seem to seek a way out through the very substance of the canvas.
The white background doesn't illuminate, it exposes. Like a clinical scene or a page torn from a diary, it offers a stark contrast to the silhouettes ravaged by blacks, vivid reds, and acidic yellows. Splashes, shards, charcoal grids—all traces of psychological or social confinement.
The viewer's gaze is drawn in by the muted violence of these presences. They are not bodies, but embodied tensions. The painterly gesture is nervous, intense, almost animalistic. There is something archaic in this way of painting: a vital need to express what words can no longer convey.
The Formatés 2 does not denounce. It observes, it exposes, it opens a wound. And in this opening, a raw truth surfaces: that of individuals crushed by the forms imposed upon them — and who, nevertheless, standing tall, continue to face it.
