With The Mirror , Philippe Trefois explores the unsettling nature of reflection, that shifting zone where identity is diffracted, blurred, and confronted by itself. Two figures observe each other, almost symmetrical, but never superimposable. They seem to be searching for themselves in the other's gaze, or perhaps fleeing what they discover there.
The bodies are knotted, twisted, as if each gesture had encountered an invisible resistance. The color is fluid, electric, almost translucent in places. Purplish pinks, violent reds, and faded blues collide in a dance of echoes. The background, punctuated with graphic fragments and abstract architecture, suggests a mental structure or a bygone memory.
This is not a faithful mirror, but an inner mirror—one that distorts, that reveals the unspeakable, that exposes the fractures of the self. Trefois does not represent a scene, but an existential confrontation, stretched like a thread between lucidity and vertigo.
