Dharavi is one of the largest slums in the world, located in the heart of the sprawling city of Mumbai in the state of Maharashtra, India.
It "houses" a population of around 1 million inhabitants in an area of only 2.4 km², reaching a crazy density of more than 420,000 inhabitants/km².
Despite the extremely harsh living conditions, the people of Dharavi demonstrate incredible energy and admirable creativity in making the most of their environment, their work, and their lives.
Looking through various images of Dharavi, I found one particularly striking: a frontal night view of a chaotic three-story facade overlooking a sewage drainage channel.
This image inspired me to create a series of paintings, from small to medium to large formats.
This mid-sized work strikes me as both a poignant symbol of deprived humanity and a strikingly beautiful abstract composition.
