I was visiting Bikaner, a remote town in Rajasthan, located in a desert region of northwest India.
As I strolled through the city bazaar at dusk, a scene caught my eye. A few people were going about their business... or doing nothing.
A pan walla shop—a vendor of pan, a kind of Indian chewing gum—was softly lit.
Above and behind the shop, a tangle of electrical wires stretched from one house to another, creating a very Indian visual chaos. In the background, a play of light and shadow, and a rising full moon.
What an atmosphere!
I felt like I was in an Indian urban scene in the style of Edward Hopper.
I took several photos at the time, and decided to paint the scene later, in my studio.
In this painting, I sought to transcribe the human presence, the light, the shadows, the quiet chaos of this suspended moment, so typically Indian.
