In Crucifixion , Philippe Trefois does not simply revisit a universal symbol – he deconstructs its flesh and spirit.
The figure, lacerated by black gestures, fragmented by raw inks, and traversed by a visceral tension, stands precariously balanced between torment and transcendence. The cross is not depicted, but it inhabits every line, every shard, every brushstroke. It becomes a metaphor for humanity exposed, crucified not by nails, but by injunctions, solitude, or injustice.
Trefois, true to his expressionist approach, lets the material speak for itself. Here, the body disappears into the gesture to better reveal the soul. The contrast of colors, between deep black, bursts of flesh, and bursts of white, reinforces the silent drama of the work.
Crucifixion does not illustrate: it questions. It transforms the sacrifice into a mirror, and the spectator into a witness to a pain that has neither time nor end.
