This sculpture by Fausto Borge condenses his intimate relationship with matter, its wear and tear, and its capacity to become memory. Nestled at the top of a slender metal rod, the aluminum form appears as a fragment torn from time: a solid core yet traversed by flows, cavities, shards, and lustrous folds.
The metal appears to have been shaped by an organic force, as if it had melted, flowed, and then suddenly frozen in a suspended moment. The surface alternates between smooth areas of almost liquid brilliance and granular or porous sections reminiscent of weathered rock, burnt bark, or a still-warm archaeological relic. This tension between smoothness and roughness, between density and emptiness, lies at the heart of Borge's material poetics.
The stem and base, deliberately simple and rustic, reinforce the presence of the sculpted fragment: they elevate it to the status of a found object, preserved, studied, almost a reliquary. One has the feeling of being in the presence of a trace—the remnant of a gesture, of a material in transformation, of a buried memory that the metal has captured.
The work invites us to approach the details, to follow the hollows, the undulations and the fractures, like so many passages left by time.
