Here's another dreamy view of old Goa: a blue room, a large mirror and an open perspective.
In the village of Chandor, you can visit old Portuguese houses that have been preserved in the same condition for more than three centuries.
In these mansions , or havelis, visitors step back in time through grand staircases, ballrooms, dining rooms, bedrooms with four-poster beds, chandeliers, mirrors, antique Goan furniture, and even sedan chairs. Through the large mirror, one glimpses a tropical garden through a window at the rear.
When I returned to Europe during the lockdown, these images came back like a dream: that of being isolated, not in a Parisian apartment, but in an old Indian haveli. And in India, through the mirror of a haveli, you can contemplate a lush garden.
This "fantasy" painting is inspired by the Braganza and Pereira houses in Chandor, and also echoes Matisse's paintings of rooms overlooking the Côte d'Azur.
