In the state of Goa, where I have visited several times, there is an ancient village called Chandor.
In Chandor, you can discover three very old and magnificent Portuguese houses, preserved in the same condition for over three centuries. In these authentic mansions or havelis, the visitor travels back in time as they pass through grand staircases, ballrooms, dining rooms, and bedrooms with four-poster beds, chandeliers, mirrors, antique Goan furniture, and even sedan chairs. And through the windows, you can glimpse splendid tropical gardens.
Back in Europe during the Covid period, I thought of these views as a dream: the dream of confinement not in a Parisian apartment, but in an old Indian haveli. And in India, from a haveli window, you can glimpse a tropical garden or sometimes even the sea.
This “fantasy” painting is inspired by the Braganza and Pereira houses of Chandor.
