In this monumental piece, Fausto Borge continues his dialogue with Rothko's legacy, shifting the focus from color to matter. The painting is structured around two large, clear, almost spectral verticals that emerge from a dense, granular, and deeply worked background. Created in marble paste, these surfaces evoke both stelae and windows deposited by time, their veiled whiteness seeming to hold an inner light.
Texture plays a central role here: the background, an earthy gray with subtle nuances, bears the marks of gesture, wear, and superimposed imprints. The two lighter panels, also striated and cracked, traversed by minute colored deposits, seem to breathe slowly, as if preserving the memory of what has been erased. This duality between density and erasure, between mineral weight and emergence, creates a silent tension at the heart of the work.
The homage to Rothko is not manifested through a direct reproduction of his chromatic fields, but rather through the quest for a contemplative space, imbued with the sacredness of silence.
