This scene is inspired by the great film "The Music Room" ( Jalsaghar ), directed by Bengali filmmaker Satyajit Ray .
Jalsaghar chronicles the final days of a decadent Bengali zamindar (landowner), B. Roy, as he attempts to preserve his family's prestige despite economic ruin. Rather than managing his land and business, the zamindar prefers to devote his time to listening to music and organizing concerts in his vast living room.
The scene depicts B. Roy surrounded by his guests, attending a recital by the famous singer Begum Akhtar. The film's music was composed and performed by the great sitarist Ustad Vilayat Khan Saheb.
Each of Satyajit Ray's scenes is constructed with remarkable attention to composition, settings, and the play of light and shadow, making them almost painterly.
Having spent a lot of time in India and having had the chance to play the sitar myself, I wanted to paint this scene in color, as a tribute to Indian classical music and to Satyajit Ray.
