This painting is inspired by the film "The Music Room" ( Jalsaghar ), directed in 1958 by the great Bengali filmmaker Satyajit Ray.
Like Kurosawa or Visconti, Ray's films are constructed through a succession of scenes that all resemble real paintings. The composition, the sets, the light and the shadows are always worked with great finesse and remarkable beauty.
In this scene, landowner B. Roy is lying on a deck chair, smoking a hookah (a long pipe), while enjoying a raga performed on the surbahar (an instrument larger than the sitar) by master musician Ustad Waheed Khan.
Having spent many years in India and had the chance to learn the sitar there, I took great pleasure in transposing this scene into a colorful painting.
