Set Apart is a large-scale oil painting that explores the theme of isolation and withdrawal through the figure of a blue Sad Monster.
This character, visibly cramped within the frame of the painting, seems almost compressed by the limits imposed by the space, reinforcing the idea of being sidelined, of a being who cannot find his place. With his head tilted and resting on his shoulder, the sad Monster adopts a posture of withdrawal, while his hands join in front of his knees in a gesture of introspection.
The strong contrast between the blue of the character and the vibrant red background accentuates this separation, as if the background were in opposition to the character's inner tranquility, or as if it symbolized a tumultuous external world from which he feels disconnected. This tension between the colors and the character's posture invites the viewer to reflect on feelings of exclusion, loneliness, and the difficulty of integrating into an environment that seems too vast, too restrictive, or too different.
Mise à part asks questions about the relationship between the individual and his environment, about the need to find a space for oneself, even in moments of withdrawal. The viewer can see a reflection of his own experiences of isolation, difference, or even a need for refuge from a world that sometimes seems oppressive.
