A visceral struggle between the self and its double.
In this ardent composition, Philippe Trefois gives form to the eternal vertigo of Narcissus—not in his frozen beauty, but in his inner turmoil. The reflection is not a mere surface; it becomes an alter ego, a distortion of the self, a replica that questions, that tears apart.
The nervous lines of the charcoal and the bursts of color intertwine two almost symbiotic figures, by turns monsters and masks, human and beast. One seems to speak, the other to listen—or perhaps to scream silently. The gestures are sweeping, the colors incandescent: deep blue, rust, ochre, vibrant white… like a chaos guided by instinct.
Philippe Trepois explores the intricacies of identity through a raw and unrestrained medium. The rough support, cardboard, adds a palpable tension, a resistance. It is a mental theatre where the subject is simultaneously actor, mirror, and spectator.
Narcissus / Dialogue with his reflection is a masterful work on the fragmentation of the ego, the ambivalence of the gaze directed at oneself, and this blurred boundary between introspection and illusion.
