Description of the work: “Reflects” by José María Lamo de Espinosa
In “Reflects,” José María Lamo de Espinosa masterfully plays with the concepts of transparency, depth, and perception. The black-and-white photograph reveals a contemporary interior space, perhaps a gallery or a chic café, bathed in diffuse light that reflects and refracts through glass surfaces. The viewer’s gaze is captured by a central column adorned with luminous patterns, a luminous presence that immediately catches the eye in the midst of a scene of everyday life.
Through this prism of glass and light, the artist skillfully juxtaposes the interior and the exterior, creating a sense of space that defies reality and invites deeper exploration. The silhouettes of people appear and disappear, blurred, like ghosts wandering in an urban dream, ephemeral characters caught between two worlds. The surface of the ground, reflective like a mirror, adds another dimension to the work, doubling the images and creating a vertigo effect where the top becomes the bottom, where reality merges with the reflection.
Lamo de Espinosa, with this subtle work, invites us to reflect – in every sense of the word – on the nature of reality and perception. "Reflects" is a tribute to modern spaces, but also a meditation on the invisible, on those moments captured by chance that reveal a hidden truth, another face of everyday life. It is a piece that finds its perfect place in an urban environment or a contemporary space, where it can continue to surprise, amaze and invite contemplation.
