In this 2020 work, Fausto Borge explores a subtle pictorial material, entirely constructed around the organic qualities of wood. The artist deliberately allows the grain, scars, knots, and imperfections of the support to show through, revealing and transforming them with delicate layers of oil. The surface, marked by wear, scratches, and diffuse transparencies, evokes an interior landscape, an old map, or a fragment of wall weathered by time.
Shades of muted greens, ochres, and warm browns blend to create an almost vegetal atmosphere, as if the painting had absorbed the light of an undergrowth. In the center, a brighter area unfolds, revealing an ambivalent form—neither entirely abstract nor completely recognizable—that suggests a presence, a silhouette, a fleeting trace.
Borge continues his exploration of the memory of materials, inviting us to contemplate what the surface reveals when allowed to breathe. The work oscillates between appearance and disappearance, between erasure and revelation, like a surviving fragment of an older object, laden with history and silence.
