In this untitled 2018 work, Fausto Borge constructs a complex, layered surface where the materials appear to have been slowly shaped by time. The mixture of marble paste, acrylic, and oil creates an almost archaeological, mineral relief, as if the artist were revealing a fragment of an ancient wall, a surface marked by erosion, weathering, and the repeated actions of vanished civilizations.
The denser center of the composition appears as a hollow and raised apparition, evoking in turn an erased map, an architectural remnant, or an organic form frozen in stone. The colors—shades of sand, light earth, ochre, and gray—reinforce this impression of an object rescued from time, patinated, and imbued with memory.
The verticality of the work, combined with its surface treatment, makes it a kind of “mineral palimpsest”. The eye moves through it, seeking to decipher the traces, the ghost lines, the abraded areas, without ever being offered a definitive reading.
Borge thus invites the viewer to contemplate the work as an enigma: a space where matter, time and abstraction meet.
