The Caryatid Room: A setting for royal receptions
Located in the heart of the Louvre Museum , the Salle des Caryatids is a spectacular room that was once used for royal receptions . This impressive place is decorated with four female statues, called Caryatids , which support the ceiling. These sculptures were made by Jean Goujon in the 16th century and are inspired by classical figures from Greek Antiquity.

The hall was the scene of prestigious events, notably under Henry IV and Louis XIII , and it even hosted the famous court ballet in 1617, danced by the young Louis XIII . The sumptuous receptions held here celebrated royal power and showcased the opulence of the French monarchy.

The Salle des Caryatids is one of the most impressive rooms in the Louvre, both for its history and its majestic architecture.
History of the room:
- Located in the Sully wing, on the ground floor of the Louvre, this room was part of the original royal palace. It was built between 1546 and 1549 during the reign of Henry II , as part of the Louvre expansion project initiated by Francis I.
- The hall was designed to host the most prestigious events, such as royal parties, receptions and shows.
The Caryatids:
- The hall takes its name from the four monumental statues called Caryatids . These female figures, sculpted by the French artist Jean Goujon , replace traditional columns and support the musical platform located above.
- The Caryatids , female figures inspired by Greek antiquity, are depicted in a majestic and elegant posture. They embody grace and strength, and symbolize Renaissance art that combines classical and modern influences.
A room at the heart of history:
- The Salle des Caryatids has been the scene of many historical events. Henri IV hosted grand banquets there, and in 1806 , Napoleon celebrated his marriage to Joséphine there.
- Over the centuries, the room has also been used to display ancient sculptures, including the famous statue of the Venus de Milo before it was transferred to another part of the museum.
Modern use:
- Today, the Caryatids Room is part of the Louvre's visitor route, where it houses sculptures from Greek and Roman antiquity.
- It remains a symbol of Renaissance architecture at the Louvre and a reference in the fusion of ancient and modern art.
A must-see place:
- With its imposing dimensions and sculptures, the Caryatid Room impresses with its solemn atmosphere and its importance in the history of the Louvre Palace.
